I just solved a MAJOR personal mystery. Thanks Google!
I remember spending hours upon hours as a child on a particular game. I could explain exactly how it played and what it looked like, but no one ever knew what I was talking about. One reason is that I would always say we had an Atari 2600 although it always bothered me because I remembered a built-in keyboard. Also, I know at one point we had a Commodore 64, so it was tough trying to dig through the memories and figure what I was remembering when. The trouble was that I remember a built-in keyboard like on the 64, but I remember the game (a 3D Donkey-Kong rip off with jungle platforming) as being very old-school and 8-bit in the style of the Atari.
Well, it turns out we had an Atari 800! Once I checked for an image I had the strangest rush of memories and emotions. That’s the machine!
Next, after some searching of Atari games from ’79-’84 (I played it in 1984), I found the game. Once I saw the picture of the box, I knew it was right. Then, after finding a YouTube video of the game, I was transported right back to my childhood. It was Congo Bongo, published by Sega (yes, that Sega) in 1983.
Anyway, it feels great to be able to grab on to that moment again.
